SOLAR Trial

In several recent studies, ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been found to suppress an animal model of MS, independent of vitamin D production. For instance, in some animal models, UV suppresses MS even in an animal state of vitamin D deficiency. And in further models, UV suppresses MS even when vitamin D receptors are removed from the animal.

Neurological disease was significantly suppressed in the mice receiving the BB (Broad band) and NB (Narrow band) UVB radiation, suggesting that UV light in the 300-315 nm wavelength range is largely responsible for the effect. This effect was dose-dependent, meaning the more UV exposure the mice received, the less neurological symptoms they had.

Ultraviolet radiation, vitamin D and multiple sclerosis.

Ultraviolet radiation, vitamin D and multiple sclerosis.

Ultraviolet radiation, vitamin D and multiple sclerosis.

Abstract
There is compelling epidemiological evidence that the risk of developing multiple sclerosis is increased in association with low levels of sun exposure, possibly because this is associated with low vitamin D status. Recent work highlights both vitamin D and non-vitamin D effects on cellular immunity that suggests that higher levels of sun exposure and/or vitamin D status are beneficial for both MS risk and in ameliorating disease progression. Here we review this recent evidence, focusing on regulatory cells, dendritic cells, and chemokines and cytokines released from the skin following exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Age of multiple sclerosis onset linked to latitude

Age of multiple sclerosis onset linked to latitude

Age of multiple sclerosis onset linked to latitude
A large international study led by the University of Tasmania’s Menzies Institute for Medical Research has found that the age at which symptoms of multiple sclerosis first start is strongly linked to latitude.
The lead author of the study, Menzies’ neuroscientist and clinician Professor Bruce Taylor, said that each 10ᵒ increase in distance from the equator was associated with a 10-month earlier onset of symptoms.

The average age at which symptoms first appeared was around 32. But after taking account of potentially influential factors, it emerged that each 10ᵒ increase in latitude was associated with a 10 month earlier start of symptoms, with those furthest from the equator starting their symptoms almost two years earlier than those closest to the equator.

A similar pattern emerged for exposure to UVB, with those getting the smallest dose during the winter months nearly two years ahead of those who got the largest dose.

Consistent with previous work, those with the primary progressive form of MS had a significantly later age of onset (around nine years later).

This is an observational study, so no firm conclusions can be drawn about cause and effect, but does suggest strongly that the factors that are associated with the well described latitudinal gradient of MS risk also affect a measure of MS disease severity (the timing of the onset of the disease).
Beneficial effects of UV radiation other than via vitamin D production

Beneficial effects of UV radiation other than via vitamin D production
... UV exposure can suppress the clinical symptoms of multiple sclerosis independently of vitamin D synthesis. Furthermore, UV generates nitric oxide (NO), which may reduce blood pressure and generally improve cardiovascular health. UVA-induced NO may also have antimicrobial effects and furthermore, act as a neurotransmitter. Finally, UV exposure may improve mood through the release of endorphins....
